Love is...

A group of 4 to 8 year-olds were recently asked: "What does love
mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have
imagined...

When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint
her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even
when his hands got arthritis too. That's love. -- Rebecca - age 8

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You
know that your name is safe in their mouth. -- Billy, age 4

Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne
and they go out and smell each other. -- Karl, age 5

Love is when my Mommy makes coffee for my Daddy and she takes a sip
before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK. -- Danny, age 7

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. -- Bobby, age 7

If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend
who you hate. -- Nikka, age 6

Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it
everyday. -- Noelle, age 7

My Mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing
me to sleep at night. -- Clare, age 6

Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken. -- Elaine,
age 6

Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford. -- Chris, age 7

Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone
all day. -- Mary Ann, age 4

I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old
clothes and has to go out and buy new ones. -- Lauren, age 4

When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars
come out of you. -- Karen, age 7

You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you
mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget. -- Jessica, age 8

Didn't want to see it
there seems to always be a propensity that when I'm out on errands with my pal Louis - he will always see the oddest of odd - hygenic horrors on the streets of honolulu and WILL point them out so that my eyes can be emblazoned with these things that nobody should have to bear to see...yesterday - we had to run out to Jamba Juice to return a few "a go go" boxes from an event...so we're on our way back to the office just one block away and what does Louis point out...YIKES - at the corner of Cooke and Kapiolani...an elderly and might we add quite obese elderly gentleman wearing a BABY BLUE Speedo....That's all - while Riding a bicycle...this was cruelty - this was indecent - this was unforgettable...unfortunately...

traffic has just about got me to my wits end...the bus strike is sure taking its toll on me. There's another week of more traffic ahead of me as the Oahu Transit Bus strike appears to have no end in sight...

it's USC vs. UH today - quite a good game - Hawaii is surely playing with lots of heart and so far as of the 2nd qtr has outplayed SC in offense. But it ain't over till it's over.

It is a day to reflect and never forget. lite a candle and commemorate how our world changed - stand in solidarity for freedom and peace. pray for our country, pray for our countrymen overseas, pray for our leaders....

it's one in the mornin and feeling pretty shitty - don't have to work tomorrow since it's the holiday and I just feel shitty - cause "i don't know how to relax" and i "can't relax" --- whatever!!! and of course it's all my fault cause I "started it" - i don't even know what I started - i hardly talked...i just sat here and took it...what a ripoff. cause now the drunk that berated me has fallen asleep and I just sit here sober and brooding over hurtful words....

okay i vented on the private blog and need to share the wealth with the world... so you think that things are fine at the office right - you bust your ass and work hard and think you're doing a pretty decent job - in fact you think you're doing a great job given the circumstances - you're performing at way more than 200% - and what do you get for it - told that you aren't doing enough - this has got to be bull!!! - not only that - stuff that you do in your free-time comes into question as interfering for why you aren't performing to peak for them - friggin - I've been working harder than most and putting in so much commitment - and then this? and worse yet - there are these secret people who are making up stories about you cause they haven't got a fuckin clue and think they do or perhaps they just want to turn the heat toward someone else - so they look more angelic - who knows - all I know is - there's some friggin idea that I spend all my time at work - working on freelance prjects - that i could support myself only doing that - which is such friggin bullshit!!! - that's why so many projects - of my real work get done - and that's why I friggin take real work home on the weekends and in the evenings to do people's friggin vacation calculations - and that's why i friggin check my work email in the middle of the morning and on weekends to get ahead - cause I'm not dedicated enough to my full-time job - what a crock!!!! furthermore - I've been given some loose mind-fuck ultimatum to come up with a "where I wanna be" with the company report...the question ought to be whether or not the company values me enough to want me to "be" At the moment it sure doesn't seem like it - and it's such a crock to think that my $20-$40/week gig is interfering with my foremost responsiblities....okay that's friggin enough - it's been a friggin emotional roller coaster day and I want off this ride already.

Okay this morning I discovered a wonderful site called Anytimegrinds it has great information about eateries, sorted and searchable by cuisine and location locally here in Hawaii...there are even menus and many of the listed restaurants offer catering services...a good starting ground for planning your party menu. This is a definite favorite on my links list now... it was amazing how there are actually a lot of the Haleiwa folks with menus posted...just love it.. check it out and signup!
Beautiful Women Month
Below is a wonderful poem. Audrey Hepburn wrote it when she was asked to share her "beauty tips." It was read at her funeral years later.
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.  As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
If you share this with another woman, something good will happen ... you will boost another woman's self esteem, and she will know that you care about her.

vegging to VH1 and must get the Damien Rice album "O" - I'm sold on this one...another must have song is - Ray Charles' song of days gone by - can't remember the song title now - but it's scribbled on my notepad int he car - heard it on the radio this morning on NPR as they discussed the Gospel to Pop emergence of greats like Sam Cook and also Ray Charles who crossed over from Gospel....

Two mornings ago - I saw a rare sight - a white Pueo (Hawaiian Owl) - even rarer this beautiful bird was out in the sunlight...there it was leisurely on the side of the road just cruising as I made my drive from the Northshore through wahiawa to town for work.

I kinda had chicken skin about it...it didn't appear to be hurt - but still for some reason I felt guilty about not stopping to be sure it was okay...maybe it was feeding on road kill??? who knows...

surprises
had several of those this weekend...visitors, comments from out the blue, emotions stirring, more comments these from left field, and also emails...just finished watching the MTV Bash of Carson Daly - quite entertaining - there was also a lot of flesh in that show - including Jennifer Love Hewitt's very fake tan, Andy Dick as a PussY Cat girl and Mya giving a Wo- lap dance...when that was done the New Spidey toon started and its pretty good..great animations and the story has some good spin.

feeling better after 2 dys of being sooo sick and literally tired sleeping for soooo long like 12 + hours at a time..

hardly made it with enough energy to make through my dindin at Marbella - which is a great pick for Mediterranean styled cuisine...the falafel had a citrusy twist to it, and the Baklava dessert was quite extraordinary with a finely shredded phyllo "shreded-wheat" texture to the top and a lightly flavorful currants and cinnamon and honey with an ala mode of french vanilla...other yummy remembrances were the moussaka done quite welll. To wash it all down - Birra Morretta an Italian import - a light brew. - almost like an Amstel Light...

..so now I'm relaxing trying to come down...and on the tube is Rob "Smooth" Thomas getting his ass whooped multiple times in his latest musical symphony "Bent". I like this one.

tomorrow is a day to continue cleaning and focus on my sister-in-law to get her invitations done....

Perhaps Tinafoo will join me up here in Oregon - not sure though cause I haven't yet received a phone call from her...anyways - we'll have to see. the weather is cooling and personally i liked it better when it was up in the 90s...now that it's cooled to the 70s there's also this cool breeze that makes it too cold for me to want to be outside...the dry air is starting to get to me as well - moisturizing is good.

I'm looking forward to my 12 day vacation to Moku Honu - Oregon country to be exact... I leave this coming wednesday and I am so excited...it will be a nice time to destress a bit...

I hope to catch up with old friends and cousins i haven't seen in a year...as well as my parents and lil bro.

One of my cousins - whom I am so proud of just sent her update on what's going on in her neck of the woods and I just loved this excerpt from her Sig-line.

Our friends are "Mai Ka Lani Mai"---they are heaven sent. Sometimes,
there are those who come into your life, and you know right away that they
were meant to be there -- to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson,
or help figure out who you are, or who you want to become.

Now, doesn't that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy...?

okay two weird thoughts before i drift off to sleep:
1. the uncle Kracker video "Drift Away" is a great cover tribute song - but did you notice that his hair do is very "something about mary"-esque? what kinda gel is he using anyway?
2. The Snapple - Male Strip Club commercial is very disturbing...i dunno is it just me or does the thought of your snapple bottle equipped with it's very own cowprint g-string make you a little less than excited about picking up a bottle????

feeling like a fat chic!
okay - so what do you call inviting people to join you for drinks afterwork (these same people actually say yes) and arriving at the "libation place" at the libation hour - and well NOBODY shows up. so a half hour into waiting for these "buddies" to join you - you call them to find out "where the @$%LL are you?" oh we're minutes away - so you wait, wait, wait, and next thing you know another 15-20 mins have gone by...your phone rings and it's not even who you were expecting to call - but it is a salvation some small relief that someone does actually respect you and want your company...so I join them at their table...and guess what - finally the "late ones" arrive and well guess what it starts to rain a little bit and most of the remaining seats are well out in the weather...so ....they say - you know what we're gonna go...big lesson learned about these "buddies."

Nevertheless, it was a delightful evening, i got a shiney new polish done...had two wonderful Butter Apple Martinis along with the Ahi Katsu and Warm Spinach Salad...and the company though unexpected was just peachy...also got to catch-up with a few faces/friends from my past who happen to be Na Hoku Hanohano award winners the multitalented Ernie Cruz, Jr. and Barry Flanagan...that definitely made me feel better.

I'm still writing off those who ditched me....their loss.
okay - i am so pleased cause - i have finally resolved the missing archives problem - whoopee! now for those of you who just found me - or who've missed a few rivetting chapters of the Let's Talk Story: Shoot Da Breeze you can read it all!!!

the tea was very interesting - quite a deal for $10 donation. interestingly enough - i got to see an old acquaintance - Edward. Quite a soulful individual - who is indeed a little difficult to figure out...i also got to see Cheryl Bartlett whom I had the pleasure of acting with in Island Skin Songs in 1999. I especially enjoyed her interpretation in dance - of Jewell's "Jupiter".

hmmm...Louis - what's going on in your head - or should I say in your heart??? who is this mystery woman???
weekend time again - number one task TANNING...tired of hearing how darn white i am...

Saturday, May 24, 2003

what do you do with yourself when it's a long weekend and it appears that most of it will be spent ALONE?...not one human being reaching out to you all day long for three days in a row...that is probably my plight all weekend as K. is off helping to build a friend's home in portlock this weekend- he left before 6am this morning and probably won't be back till after 6 or 7 tonite...

so you make yourself busy -to a feverish pace - consumed in things "foado" as Louis would say.
or you climb into a little hole and vegitate on the boob tube planning that DVD marathon of who knows what
or you go shopping so at least then you can pretend that people WANT to talk to you when the sales people ask - "can I get a room started for you to try that on?"
or do you actually do something more physical like swim across the street at the beach, or hunt for shells....
or do you complete a craft project (like my mosaics, bead watch, scrapbooking, album organizing, card making)
or is it curling up with that magazine or book that you've been meaning to read from cover to cover.

hmmm. perhaps it is all of the above...cause the only time that time seems to fly is when you are too busy, too distracted about the time to even give it a second thought that you are indeed ALONE.

procrastination --- from waking up, from completing responsibilities, from mailing the bills, from getting that tan, from shaving those legs, from buying that plane fare...oh well.
sometimes there isn't an empire to begin with - it's only an imagined hierarchy...play on a level playing field at least in your mind and you too can be king (or queen) of the castle..

Guava chablis buzz wears down...loneliness consumes...silence broken by a dog's bark and the sound of traffic passing by...perhaps a new escape is necessary...
jamba twice in a row - today's choice - strawberries wild...

just realized that Jamba fresh squeezed OJ is quite yummy...served over crushed ice...

is what's inside really so different from what's on the outside? how we are perceived by other's a different being than our own self reflections? hmmm. what then about how people will say - wow she has a really good spirit? have they seen through the facade and seen the real person within? do they have xray vision? if they do - once I learn the truth - will that change me inside or outside - because I now know? do we metamorphose into the being that we want them to see? or the one that they think they see?

another week ends
the momentum moves forward
into the weeked hours
we march, we march toward

to a personal nature
cares of the day turn
planning out the weekend minutes
see them slipping by - for more I yearn

lost in the planning
can't find control
can't grasp the point
that on time will roll
release your inner poet
you may not have ever thought yourself to be a lyrical master or a cyrano - but perhaps this inner poet lies in wait for release....

sounds of the sea
I am quite inspired to do some creative writing and to get all of your input on this - at hula tonite our homework was to think about how Waikiki of yesteryear is a treasured memory. How the sand, the music, the grandeur of the grand dames like the Pink Palace and the First Lady of the Pacific - The Moana have stood the test of time and are still a testament to a time of fewer worries, romance and Hawaiian elegance.

fun in waikiki
for two years my brother and I lived just a walk away from the beaches of waikiki - from time to time - when we felt a wild hair we'd walk from our date street apt. down to Kapahulu Ave. across the Ala Wai and go hang out down at Walls, or go grab a bite to eat and listen to some music at the International Market Place or at Duke's Canoe Club. Being so close made it convenient also to attend the Aloha Week Festival waikiki Hoolaulea street party or the Japan Festival. But, besides the music, the hustle and bustle of visitors, and cars on the cruise, the most haunting inescapable sounds of the gentle waters rustling at the nearby Waikiki beach were really etched in my mind.

On one occasion my calabash cousin and I sat at one of Mayor Harris' new benches along the Kalakaua walkway - and the waters were so calming - so much of a reminder of freedom. what a beautiful place...the moon shown above and the waters rhythmically lapped against the shoreline.

my sacrifice at Canoe's
my first and still only surfing experience was at the break known as Canoe's. I rode one wave feeling the rush of the water beneath the board - how exhilirating - what a thrill. the sun was near setting and my friends were determined to teach me a few things about surfing....i learned that paddling out was darn hard work, and that what the waters want - the waters will take...a shiny gold bauble - my 16th birthday Hawaiian heirloom gold band sunk through the crystal clear waters as the wave sucked it right off my finger where it had been stuck for over a year..like slow motion I jumped off the board trying to grasp it - but the waves ebbed and flowed and the next thing we knew - the sand had covered it hiding the band from our sight. maybe it was the surfing gods collecting their toll for providing that wonderful first ride...

what are your memories of Waikiki?
note if you checkout the webcam - i recommend looking at the past 12 views of the day - it's really quite marvelous..

lookin po nub in all the wrong places
could that be the story of Trishelle and Steven? Antony & Cleopatra? or is that the story of us all? do we look to material things? do we look to some perfect image? do we think that love will flow down on us because of something we do or say, how much money we earn or how we dress? or is it like the Gatorade slogan "It's in You"?

Sunday, April 13, 2003

a soft cool breeze blows - the scent of plumeria wafts into the house...banana leaves rustle...morning sun rises over the pupukea bluffs.
I sure am an American idol fan - just disappointed that I usually have to read about who got the boot - since I'm at hula on results night. Clay was my favorite - but I do feel Ruben has arrived! The leather jacket, losing the 205 jerseys was a big move for a big guy - he is the idol - and I still want to hear good things from the powerful voice of Clay. I feel his place will be as the next "it" boy of musical theatre. Other favorites on the show include - Kimberley Caldwell and Kimberly Locke.

POSTING FOR LOUIS:

"moving through the streets at night with your
hands grip tightly to the wheel. vibrations from
your stereo fills the compartment. laughter and
smiles from each passenger fills the void. i
guess that's what hanging out with friends is all
about...."

Stu - you are becoming an all around man of the theatre eh? I was itchy to do a show and picked up a script prior to the audition for Alan's play "King K's Poker Game". Of course the only role - i coulda turned out for was the 20something Hawaiian woman...I liked the play - but I hoped it would be more of a dramatic role...so didn't audition - it's really quite a commitment to do a show and I just wasn't sold on the part...do you know who got cast???
whoee...more friends! hooray! I'm watching the volleyball game now - torn between cheering for the warriors or the rubbers...didn't watch the news so I'm not sure who won....Louis should know. sheesh you're home fast and blogging along. Welcome!
turns out there's something called CHREESE. It's touted as the vegan cheese alternative??? try saying chreese five times fast. dare ya.
Vegans aren't supposed to want to eat cheese - cheese is supposed to be dairy - let's keep it that way!
I like cheese. However last week I met a cheese I didn't like. Tofu-Vegan cheese. It was evil. It tastes like wax fruit. Be warned!
Hawaii - about the same - awesome thunder and lightening show over Oahu tonite...we're told to possibly brace for more of the same over the next couple of days...we're in a new office for the last two years further down on Kapiolani across of the Blaisdell arena now...how are things in Japan? clark and henry still make their annual trip to see sumo, right? do they still look you up when they visit?
My goodness - we have a winner!!! life is still good - I've got a couple of other pet project blogs that I started at the end of march...it's like being a newbie all over again!!! just love it...how's Japan - the SARS thing is kinda scary huh? I think about that for my friends overseas...
eager in anticipation - she waits in the dark - backlit display illuminating - "is there anyone out there cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe....when it gets cold outside i've got nobody to love..." swoons from the VHI jukebox...who'll be the first? she wonders. how long will it take?

Thursday, April 10, 2003

otay so this is what you asked for - a place you could rant too! so here it is... - want to add a member? we need some initiation criteria - but you all can help come up with the rules...I'm thinking an initiation haiku or tanka, or a good joke or something like that. for now you're the lucky ones....Let's talk story.
